Subsidy Programs

FAMILY Subsidy

The City of Brossard offers a 50% subsidy on the cost of washable diapers, up to a total of $100 per child.

What is a washable diaper?

A washable diaper is made of fabric—typically, cotton, bamboo, hemp or microfibre. It can be adjusted to the child’s waist size using Velcro fasteners or snap buttons. Washable diapers are easy to maintain and reuse over a period of several years. They make it possible to save money and reduce the environmental impact of disposable diapers.

What are the environmental benefits?
  • In Quebec, an estimated 600 million disposable diapers are sent to landfill sites each year, representing almost 60,000 tons of waste that has to be managed.
  • Using a single washable diaper makes it possible to divert the equivalent of 230 disposable diapers away from landfill sites, which therefore reduces the volume of landfill material.
  • It takes between 200 and 500 years for a disposable diaper to partially decompose, depending on the local conditions. Disposable diapers are the third most common item found in landfill sites.
  • For a single child using disposable diapers for a period of two and a half years (i.e., until the age of toilet training), it is necessary to cut down 4.5 trees to produce the 200 kg of wood pulp needed to make them. It is also necessary to use around 25 kg of plastic and 67 kg of crude petroleum.
  • Manufacturing disposable diapers requires 39% more water than manufacturing and cleaning washable diapers.
  • Using washable diapers respects the 4R principle (reduce, reuse, recycle and recover) and thereby contributes to the preservation of our natural resources.

MULCHING BLADE Subsidy Program

With the aim of encouraging residents to practice grasscycling, the City is offering a $20 subsidy for the purchase of mulching blades for your lawnmower. The subsidy is limited to one per household (until the subsidy budget is used up).
Please note that, in accordance with the by-law relating to waste management (REG-126), it is now prohibited to dispose of grass clippings with regular garbage.

We therefore invite you to equip your lawnmower with a mulching blade and practice grasscycling, which offers the ideal solution for disposing of your grass clippings in an eco-friendly manner.

What is grasscycling?

Grasscycling involves cutting your grass to a height of 3 inches (7.5 cm) and leaving the clippings where they are after mowing. Equipping your lawnmower with a mulching blade will cut your grass more finely, thereby reducing the time it takes to decompose (72 hours).
What are the environmental benefits?

  • Reduces the amount of grass sent to landfill sites (reduction of more than 30% during summer).
  • Significantly reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) production and foul odours caused by buried grass clippings.
  • Enables you to meet up to 30% of your lawn’s fertilizer needs.
  • Increases your grass’s natural resistance to disease and dehydration.
  • Thanks to its height and the grass clippings left on the ground that are 80% water, your grass will retain its humidity, which means you will not need to water it as often.
