Civil Marriage

Persons who wish to enter into a civil marriage must meet certain requirements and respect certain conditions. The marriage must be officiated in accordance with the Civil Code of Quebec’s stipulations. The following provides some practical information regarding this matter.

The Officiant

Some City of Brossard municipal councillors are authorized by the Ministre de la justice to officiate civil marriages held within the City’s territory.

Required Documents

The following documents are required if you desire a civil marriage:
  • Original copy of your birth certificate
  • Proof of identity with photo and address
  • Other relevant documents, depending on your situation
Preparatory Meetings

The future spouses and the officiant meet twice before the ceremony.

During the first meeting, they get to know each other and discuss the date and location of the ceremony. The future spouses fill out a questionnaire and provide the required original documents.

During the second meeting, a witness must accompany the future spouses in order to sign the Notice of Civil Marriage. This witness must be an adult but does not have to be one of the witnesses at the marriage ceremony.

In addition, during the second meeting, the future spouses must pay the fee for officiating a civil marriage.

Publication

In accordance with the law, the Notice of Civil Marriage must be posted at least twenty (20) days prior to the marriage date at the location where the ceremony will be held and at the Palais de justice de Longueuil.

The Ceremony

The marriage may be held between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Please note that we recommend holding celebrations on Saturday.

During the ceremony, each future spouse must be accompanied by a witness.

Please also note that the use of confetti, rice or similar items is prohibited. It is also prohibited to eat and drink inside City Hall.

Fee

The cost of officiating a marriage is based on the Tariff of Court Costs in Civil Matters and of Court Office Fees and the Municipal Council’s by-laws. It is subject to the applicable federal and provincial taxes. The fee must be paid by cheque to the City of Brossard.

Marriage held at Brossard City Hall: $518.00 plus tax
